Mentor Marsh Nature Center is an interpretive nature preserve and
part of the largest coastal Lake Erie marsh in northeastern Ohio!
The area is a unique combination of marsh, forest and beach
habitat and home to a variety of plants, animals, and birds. In
fact, during spring and fall migration season over 250 species of
birds can be found. Trails are open daily, year-round, dawn to
dusk. The Nature Center is open to the public Saturdays and
Sundays noon to 5 p.m. from April through October. There is no
charge, and all are welcome. During the week, programs for groups
are available by appointment at a nominal charge. For more

This National Historic site consists of a marine museum and
lighthouse tower that is open to the public and provides
spectacular views of Lake Erie. The marine museum houses its'
original 3rd order Fresnel lens, the Frontenac pilothouse,
nautical artifacts, and more. Open 1 to 6 p.m. on Wed., Sat., Sun.
and holidays from Memorial Day through 3rd weekend in Sept. Group

Fairport
Harbor Village
The
best kept secret in Northeast Ohio! Fairport Harbor, located 30
miles east of Cleveland on the shores of Lake Erie, is a unique
village rich in history and attractions. The village,
approximately one square mile, was settled by Finnish, Hungarian
and Slovenian immigrants. Fairport has two lighthouses, two
museums, the Finnish Monument, and LaSalle and Mormon historical
markers. The Fairport Port Authority offers boat launching
facilities for a nominal fee. If you like to fish, cast your line
along the river or from the harbor pier. Plus, you can reserve a
fishing charter to fish for walleye, steelhead or perch for a half

The national headquarters of the Herb Society of America resides
in a stone farmhouse built in 1841. It is considered the oldest
stone house in the county, built of Ohio sandstone quarried
nearby. There is no admission fee to the house or the gardens that
surround the house, allowing visitors to see beautiful examples of
how to landscape with herbs. The building houses the
administrative offices and the 3,000 volume library, with
Librarians available for research. Library holdings also include a
collection of rare books dating back to the 17th century. Open:

A meticulously restored
19th century village showcases the vitality and spirit of the
early American frontier. A part of the religious fervor of the
1830’s is the story of the early members of The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. Attractions include Newel K. Whitney
Store and Home, an
Ashery, a working sawmill, the John Johnson
Inn, a schoolhouse, and the Saints of Kirtland. Also included are
the Isaac Morely Farm, John Johnson Farm, Stone Quarry, and
Fairport Harbor. Summer hours: 9am-7pm. Winter 9am-5pm, Sunday
11:30am-7pm.

nature trails, the Holden Arboretum is one of the largest
arboretums in the United States. Home to flora from all over the

Indian Museum of Lake

items, 10,000 B.C. to 1650 A.D., from this area and Ohio. Indian
crafts from North America, 1800-2006 are displayed. The Indian

carefully restored home contains the family’s furnishings, art and
books and is graced by the magnificent memorial library added five
years after President Garfield’s assassination. The Visitor
Center, housed in an 1893 carriage house,
features exhibits that illustrate James Garfield’s life and his
place in American history. May 1 to October 31 James A. Garfield
National Historic Site is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to
5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. November 1 to April 30 open
Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. (closed Monday through
Friday). School groups and adult groups are welcome by

Constructed in the 1830s, this National Historic Landmark was the
first temple built by Joseph Smith and his followers as they
sought to “restore” primitive Christianity. Distinctive design
features include tiers of elaborately carved pulpits on both ends
of the large meeting rooms. The temple served as the center of
community life for two thousand Latter Day Saints by 1838. Within
a year, all but one hundred were gone. A new 12,000 square foot
Visitor Center uses interactive museum exhibits and video to
introduce their story and solve the mystery of their sudden
departure.
The Kirtland Temple is owned and maintained by the Community of
Christ. Guided 40-to 50-minute tours begin in the visitor center.
Allow 1-hour minimum. Kirtland Temple and Visitor Center Hours;
March-October: Mon.-Sat. 9-5, Sun. 1-5; November and December:
Mon.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. 1-4. January and February (open weekends
only): Sat. 10-4, Sun. 1-4. Closed New Years Day, Easter,

This beautiful 1876 Italianate structure once housed
the County’s neediest citizens but its 18,000 sq. ft. of public
space is now used as the Center of historical research, education,
exhibits and activity in Lake County. Visitors will find, on
permanent exhibit, galley’s that reflect the Victorian heritage of
the building, the finest collection of late 1800’s music boxes in
N.E. Ohio, and interactive Native American exhibit of southern
Lake Erie, gift shop, community rooms and more. The center also
hosts an annual calendar of special events. A National Legacy
Event, the Little Mountain Heritage Festival is celebrated at this
site the last weekend of July each year and attracts thousands of
